#8 Must have iPhone apps for the Private Investigator part 2

This blog covers iPhone applications that every investigator should consider having available to them. Some of these applications have been untested by myself but only because I have not had a need for the applications at the moment. I am sure many of you will have a need for these applications.

The first application that I am pretty excited to share is called GPS by TeleNavEasy directions. This is a free application that works just like a Garmin GPS or a Magellan GPS. To be honest I was a bit upset to find this application, as I purchased a GPS several years ago for over $300. I have used this device and it works quite well. This app gives voice turn by turn directions which are pretty impressive. There are other GPS apps on the market as you will see by searching for GPS on your iPhone.

Do you ever wish you could know when the police were being called on you during surveillance? Well that is now possible with 5-0 Radio Police Scanner Lite. This is a free application that works very well in my opinion. After picking the feed you want to hear, you can continue running other apps on your iPhone. The delay is listed as being between 1 and 3 seconds.

If you need to search court information, PACER (Public Access to Court Electronic Records) is now available on the iPhone through the FedCtRecords application. You are able to search attorney information, party information, deadlines, hearings, case summaries and dockets. You must sign up first through the Pacer website.  There are small fees associated to the searches. More information on Pacer can be located at http://www.pacer.gov/.

TLO from TLO.com has their own app on the iPhone. Based off of the sample pictures it appears as if you can search vehicles, boats, phone numbers, emails, people and property. I use IRB Search but have thought of making a switch over to TLO because of this app. Definitely worth having this app if you already use the TLO service.

Wi-Fi Finder by Jiwire Inc. is a great app to have when you need an internet connection for your computer. This app will give you all the locations with Wi-Fi in your area that is free and paid. You can filter options by venue or provider. There are similar applications available, but this is the one I have used which is free and happens to have the highest rating.

Facebook by Facebook, Inc. is a must have app for a private investigator. Every investigator should have access to this resource for identifying individuals.

Find My Friends by Apple is a great application for parents, Agency owners, or just about anyone. Essentially this application tracks via gps, the location of the friends you have listed with the same application. Agency owners could friend their employees and see their locations during the work day to make sure they are where they say they are. This application actually helped a husband determine his wife was cheating on him. This can be located at http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/iphone-app-find-friends-finds-cheating-wife-apple/story?id=14753196#.Twp2qtS0x2C

I hope you check out these applications on the iPhone. My next iPhone blog will be honorable mention apps that everyone should have. If you would like to learn more subscribe to my blog

  1. pretty good insights. I’ll be sure to stop by and read more from you. thanks.

  2. Thanks for every other excellent post. The place else may just anybody get that type of information in such an ideal method of writing? I have a presentation next week, and I am on the look for such info.

  3. This could be the appropriate blog for every person who hopes to discover this subject. You understand a lot its virtually difficult to argue together with you (not that When i would want…HaHa). You surely put a different spin on the topic thats been discussing for several years. Outstanding stuff, just great!

    • Since I use many of the applications when I am working I knew these topics would be of interest to others in the field of private investigations. Many people find this website by doing a search for private investigator iPhone applications. Thanks for checking out the site.

  4. fantastic post, very informative. I wonder why the other experts of this sector do not notice this. You should continue your writing. I’m confident, you’ve a huge readers’ base already!

  5. I always read your blog, if you can, do publish new stuff more often 😀

  6. Jon,
I enjoy reading your blog and listening to your podcasts. You present a very good common sense approach to the situations that you cover. Keep up the good work. By the way, when I tried to get the TLO app for my iPhone, I was informed that it was not available. Can you advise? Take care and be safe.

    Best regards,
    Keith Dinkins

    • Thanks for reading and listening. I am not sure what is going on with the TLO application. I personally use IRB Search. Do you subscribe to TLO’s services?

  7. Great information on your site. From time to time, I’ve been tasked with taking still pictures of individuals or cars parked in front of residences with very low light conditions.

I can’t find a reasonably price night vision digital camera. What do you recommend or use in these situations?

    • I can imagine that is tough to get a decent picture at night without using a flash. Do you have a DSLR camera? If you do, you can change functions in the camera to where you take a longer exposed photo. But with that being said, your camera must be extremely still or the photo will be blurred. You can always take photos with your head lights pointing at the vehicle. There are some infrared cameras on the market for less than 200 but I have not tested them.

  8. This is a very informative Blog and glad to be on board, have you ever served process papers Andrew? If so. have you any interesting stories to share? Thank you for a most welcomed site.

    • I have served papers twice and both times were nothing special. If you have a good story to tell I would love to hear it and maybe share your story on the podcast. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment William. I am glad you are enjoying the site. I haven’t added to it in about a month but I hope to get back on track very soon.
