EVISTR Digital Voice Recorder Review

Small Evistr digital voice recorder

The EVISTR Digital Voice Recorder is one of the smaller audio recorders I have come across.  I wondered after opening the box what kind of audio quality it would record since this product is listed as a best selling item on Amazon.

In this review of the EVISTR Digital Voice Recorder, I will cover the following areas:

  • What is in the box
  • Audio Record Specs
  • Features and Functions of the Audio Recorder
  • Audio Quality
  • Final Thoughts
EVISTR Digital Voice Recorder
In the Evistr box

What is in the EVISTR Digital Voice Recorder Box

Audio recorder

The recorder is much smaller than any recorder I have reviewed or used in the past.  It is only slightly larger than some of my covert spy cameras and audio recording devices.  The exterior feels like metal though I am not sure if it actually is.  Other components like the buttons appear to be plastic which is common (generally speaking), with audio recorders.

Headphones

The headphones are generic and didn’t fit into my ears very well as if they were just too large.  There were no adapter nubs for different size ears.

USB cable

The USB cable is used for charging and data transferring to a computer.

Instructions manual

The instruction manual is easy to read and I had no problem using it when figuring out how to operate the audio recorder.

Audio Recording Specs of the EVISTR Digital Voice Recorder

The EVISTR Digital Voice Recorder gives you 4 different recording quality choices which are:

  • 32 kbps – Compressed MP3 audio quality for long recordings (LP Standard)
  • 64 kbps – Compressed MP3 audio quality for long recordings (LP Standard)
  • 128 kbps – Compressed MP3 audio quality (SP Standard)
  • 192 kbps – Compressed MP3 audio quality (HQ)
  • 384 kbps – Lossless WAV audio quality (PCM)

An MP3 is a compressed file that is good for anything on the internet like videos.

A WAV file is that lossless, uncompressed audio file that allows for CD-quality audio recordings.

EVISTR Digital Voice Recorder Features

Features and Functions of the EVISTR Digital Voice Recorder

Voice Activated Recordings

In this mode, the recorder only records when voices are heard.  You can adjust the sensitivity of the voice-activated recording as well.  This is useful when you want to conserve memory or just don’t want dead air in the recording.

Different Recording Quality Options

As previously indicated there are 4 different recording quality options.  The options will affect the quality of the recordings.

A/B Repetition (Looping)

In this mode, you can mark a recording area of a playback you want to be repeated.

8GB Memory

8GB of memory is quite a bit for an audio recorder but it is nice to have since you can transfer songs onto the device and listen to music from the recorder if you choose to do so.

Audio Sensitivity Control

The recorder allows for you to change the microphone sensitivity based on your environment and the closeness to the person (or noise) you are recording.  The further away from the recorder the more you would need to adjust the sensitivity.

11 Hours Recording on Single Charge

The manual indicates it has a 230 MAH internal rechargeable Polymer Battery.  11 hours is a very long time for continuous recording.

560 Hours of Recording (on 32kpbs)

560 hours comes to approximately 23 days.  23 days of audio recording space is available if recording on the lowest quality mode.  That is quite a bit of audio to listen back to.

Auto Saves Every 5 Seconds

This is a very interesting feature just in case something happens to the recorder while recording.

Audio Quality

The audio quality in the 384 kbps settings was fantastic with the microphone approximately 1 foot away from my face.  I have no complaints about the sound whatsoever.

As I stepped away from the recorder at the distance of approximately 8 feet, my voice was still very clear and audible when listening back to the recording.

As I distanced myself approximately 20 feet from the recorder my voice became faint when listening back to the audio, however, I could still hear what I was saying even if it was faint.

Final Thoughts

When I review audio recorders I am reviewing them with an investigator’s mindset. I want to know how they are going to work for me when interviewing individuals in person or even on phone calls.  Being able to hear voices clearly makes all the difference in the world when having to listen to the recordings while writing reports.  Audio recorders are an important piece of private investigation equipment.

With that being said the EVISTR Digital Voice Recorder sounded fantastic when recording at the highest level.

When recording at the lowest level the audio quality degraded significantly and I knew it was not a level that I would be using for interviews.

I felt like everything work really well when testing this audio recorder. It was easy to navigate through the menus and set up the device (date and time/recording settings).

The only true negative that I had for this recorder is that I could not find a recording lock function on this device even though the box said it had one.  With that being said, it indicates that it saves the recording every 5 seconds so maybe you don’t need a lock on it if it does that.

This is not an audio recorder with a bunch of extra stuff on it.  It has the basic things needed for audio recordings and it is priced affordably and appropriately for what it can do.  As I write this, the devices is a #1 Amazon Best Seller.

I would definitely recommend this device to anyone looking for a quality recording device.
